How this tool works
Your GPS position (or entered coordinates, or a map click) is tested against US state boundary polygons from the Census Bureau, entirely in your browser. Uses your device GPS with one click (your location is processed in your browser and never stored), or you can type coordinates or click the map.

- Settle which state you are in on road trips through tri-state areas
- Check state lines while hiking trails that cross them, like the Appalachian Trail
- Identify the state for any coordinates in a dataset
- Works offline once the page has loaded
Why use it
State lines matter for everything from sales tax to fishing licenses, and signs are easy to miss. A boundary test on your real position is more reliable than guessing from the last sign you saw.
