How this tool works

The tool computes the geographic midpoint along the great-circle path between your two places: the point that is genuinely equidistant from both along the surface of the Earth, not just the average of the coordinates. It then searches a bundled list of 7,000+ world cities for the nearest listed city to that midpoint, and maps all three points.

What you can do with it

  • Pick a fair meeting point between two people or teams
  • Find which town sits closest to the true midpoint of a long trip
  • Get the exact halfway coordinates and each side's distance
  • Plan multi-leg journeys around the midpoint

Why use it

Meet in the middle arguments are best settled with math. The true great-circle midpoint often surprises people, especially over long distances where it drifts well away from the straight line drawn on a flat map.

Data sources and methods

  • Natural Earth populated places (city coordinates)
  • OpenStreetMap Nominatim (fallback geocoding for place names not in the bundled city list)
