Find the closest open municipal landfill to any point in the United States, from official EPA data.
How this tool works
Enter your city, ZIP code, or coordinates, or use your GPS position with one click (processed in your browser, never stored). The tool measures the straight-line distance from your point to every currently open municipal solid waste landfill in the EPA LMOP database, 1,236 sites nationwide, then shows the closest with its distance and compass direction, the five next-closest, and everything plotted on the map. Each result links to its spot on Google Maps. Distances are as the crow flies, so travel distance will be longer.
What you can do with it
- Find the closest operating landfill to any address or ZIP code
- Compare the five next-closest disposal sites before a trip
- See how landfills are distributed across the country on the map
- Jump to any site on Google Maps for directions
Why use it
People search for the nearest dump when clearing a house, finishing a renovation, or checking what is upwind of a property they are buying. Official EPA data answers it properly.
Data sources and methods
- EPA Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) database
Coverage note: Covers currently open municipal solid waste landfills in the EPA LMOP database; construction-debris-only and private facilities may not be listed, and many landfills only accept commercial loads, so check access rules before driving out.
