How this tool works
Your position (from GPS, a place search, or typed coordinates) is sent to the free Open-Meteo elevation service, which reads it from a 90-meter resolution global digital elevation model and returns the ground elevation at that point. Note this is the elevation of the ground surface, not your phone's barometric altitude, so inside a tall building it gives the street level below you.
What you can do with it
- Check your elevation while hiking, driving mountain passes, or acclimatizing
- Settle arguments about which town or trailhead is higher
- Get elevation in meters and feet together
- Understand altitude context, like where altitude sickness risk begins
Why use it
Phones show position but rarely elevation, and GPS altitude readings are notoriously poor. A digital elevation model lookup gives a stable, comparable ground elevation for any point.
