Wizarding School Locations from Harry Potter

Map created by Pottermore.com

The map above shows the locations of the 7 Wizarding schools that have been revealed so far, that exist in the Harry Potter universe.

The map comes from the official Pottermore.com website, which also claims that there are: “eleven long-established and prestigious wizarding schools worldwide.” This of course means the location of the remaining 4 3 is anyone’s guess! (Koldovstoretz in Russia one of the 4 missing schools)

The 7 8 schools are:

  1. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (Scotland)
  2. Beauxbatons Academy of Magic (France)
  3. Castelobruxo (Central Brazil)
  4. Durmstrang Institute (Northern Europe)
  5. Ilvermorny (Eastern North America)
  6. Mahoutokoro School of Magic (Japan)
  7. Uagadou School of Magic (Uganda)
  8. Koldovstoretz (Russia) – Not on the map

If there isn’t one then rip the owl that has to give us the letter. But we are not entirely unlucky. I’m a kiwi and there is a dragon native to NZ that often migrates to Australia.

There’s a great episode of Melbourne based podcast “Plumbing the Death Star” where they design an Australian magic school.

Their version is in the middle of the outback, with class buildings separated by open ground, and to match the danger and whimsy of Hogwarts, there’s wild animals (magical and mundane) all over the campus.

I hope there would be main schools in Asia that we can attend to. Like in the Middle-East or East Asia, but that would be too difficult because of the languages. There should be some sort of magical language that only witches and wizards can understand, so that we would be united in a certain region as a whole and be able to understand each other.

My guess is that out of the 3 that haven’t been revealed that one in in Australia, and one must be in the Middle East. The last one I haven’t even a guess about where it would be, it isn’t Africa since the school there takes students from the whole continent and is the school with the highest population. Anyone agree on my guesses about the 2 possible locations of the 3 yet to be revealed? And their guess on where the 3rd could be? China or India would be my best guesses but I’d think the Middle East school would take students from India, unless because of the population in India they have so many young witches and wizards they need their own school, same goes for China.

Call me crazy, but I think there may be a school or coven of exiled witches and wizards from around the world who have created their own ways and traditions in one of the most isolated regions in the world: Somewhere like Antarctica, the Sahara or maybe even in an elaborate system of tunnels or caves. As for the three other missing schools, I’m placing my bets on Australia, United Arab Emirates and Southern India. Somewhere further away from the other, more mainstream wizarding schools. Each school will have unique traditions based on the region (Australia = Indigenous culture/dreamtime themes, etc.)

Do you mean that the Aussie kids would get really high and experience the Dreamtime? Australia isn’t all indigenous things and if New Zealand and Oceana went to one school in Australia they would be experiencing different cultures, I don’t think Aussie wizards and witches would experience indigenous stuff but ancient wizard and witches ways potentially even the same things as Hogwarts since we’re both in the commonwealth and both connected.

Here are my thoughts on the missing wizarding schools:

    1)
I think there really has to be a Spanish speaking wizarding school. Brazil is an odd choice for a wizarding school for me since they are one of the very few countries in central and south america that don’t speak Spanish. But since the school in Brazil is confirmed, I strongly believe that there would be one more wizarding school somewhere in Latin America for the immense Spanish speaking population of the world.

    2)
Furthermore I completely agree with the broadly stated opinion that there has to be one in the Middle East for the large Arab population.
Also I believe students from countries in Northern Africa would rather go to the Middle Eastern school than to the African school since the Arab culture is closer to them. Some may even go to Beaubatons considering that french is a common language in the maghreb countries due to colonial history.

    3)
The last wizarding school in my opinion would have to be in India or China. Maybe somewhere in the Himalayas since that would probably be a good hidden location but nice and centrally in Asia. I think this is highly logical since they have such huge populations and therefore would certainly need a wizarding school.
I know this will be unpopular but logically thinking there should not be a school in Australia (or NZ). (If there were 12 schools then I would say there is one, but with just 11 all other locations seem way more important) There are already 2 English speaking schools in the world where kids from Australia and NZ could be sent if their parents don’t mind the distance. Otherwise they would go to one of the Asian schools. It would depend wether similar culture/language or closer distance is more important to you.

Certainly all schools would have developed their own transportation system for students, probably much more elaborate than the Hogwarts express. (Maybe some massive flying carpets could be involved since they are known to exist in the HP universe and have just been forbidden in Britain.) Also given the transportation the Beaubatons and Durmstrangs use, complex and unknown transportation seems highly likely to me. It don’t think it is a problem that we don’t hear about them since schools are known for keeping their secrets well hidden.

    In conclusion:
These are the locations of the three unknown wizarding schools in my opinion:
    – Latin America: for the Spanish speakers
    – Middle East
    – India/China/Himalayas

I agree that there should be a school where the main language is Spanish, but where would it be? In Mexico? But the mountains are pretty well populated (see; Mexico City) as much as I love this idea I don’t really know how this would work out. One of the three schools left has also already been confirmed to be in Australia. So my ideas for the next two schools would probably be in the Himalayas ( what? It makes sense!!!) and the Middle East because there’s probably enough magic students and a big enough area (it’s like the desert people!) so yeah and with the Himalayas you get students from China and India and the mountains so those would definitely be my choices for the two remaining magic schools (even though I was debating this a lot! I really want a Latin magic school to come up!)(Please!!!🙏🏻)

If you go off your logic then everyone could just go to one school because of the language spell. Doesn’t matter if there is already 2 English schools! There should be one in Australia. With your logic people in the Bahamas (searched it. They speak English) would also go to Hogwarts or the American school. I’m going to say you’re situated in America. (for convenience) what if America didn’t have a wizarding school and Australia did. By your logic you would be fine travelling all the way to Australia just to go to school. You wouldn’t be able to see your family at breaks because it would be pretty expensive. Imagine having to do that every holiday. Then imagine how expensive sending things would be. You would have to use long distance owls and they are VERY expensive. So now, you can’t see them at holidays, and you can’t send or receive packages even semi often. Do you still think that Australian wizards should just travel to America or Britain? Do you still think it’s just a matter of if your parents are fine with the distance? Also what if they’re not ok with it? Then all the wizards and witch’s in Australia are just not going to be taught?

I reckon that the last three schools are in Australia, India and either at the top of Russia of Canada.

The Australian one would either be smack bang in the desert where no muggles live or right in the centre of a giant rain-forest. And they would specialise in poisons, close up combat not just their magic and aboriginal cultures (remedies, rituals etc.)

India’s school would be on top of a large mountain and their school would be/look like a Hindu temple. They would specialise in mental/emotional magic (magic that can differ moods, manipulate etc) and defence against the dark (magic and evils in general)

Canadas insitute would teach camouflage and trickery.( how to secretly do something, how to find stuff out easily, how to pretend to be someone you are not etc). Russias school would tech extreme spells, overpowered techniques/ perfecting techniques and multiple shelter/defence/self helping spells.

just ideas tho. It would be cool if J.K released what the last real schools are.

      *Mayavandana Vidyalaya*
It’ll probably be somewhere in the Himalayas so Muggles can’t find it – but it also probably has anti-Muggle protection like Hogwarts, so it might not matter where it is. And the Muggles’ internet, radio connection, etc. won’t work around it… Southern or Central India is the best place for these, also because India is highly superstitious country and, as @aritra said, there are SO MANY demons in our epics!

these all seem to be boarding schools like Hogwarts but have you guys considered smaller, ‘frontier’ size establishments of learning?
Any boarding school would require a huge outlay of money to send a child too and most parents are not comfortable with sending their children away in the first place. You also have to consider the differences in language and custom and religion.
My suggestion is that there are 11 prestigious schools and perhaps hundreds of smaller institutions as well as a network of private tutors and, of course, homeschooling.
travel between places with portkeys, floo and apparition has been used canonically as acceptable means of everyday transport – Molly Weasley uses the floo network to go shopping and everyone seems to be fire hopping or apparating in order to get to work. Yes, the latter appears to be restricted by a license but the same can be said for driving a car and how many of us were dropped off at school by our mummies? Side-along could just be their version.
Perhaps some schools were run by the government. Hogwarts has been a school of renown for hundreds of years, here in Australia we have buildings pushing 200years. Its not comparable. a lot of country schools, here and around the world, started as single room buildings with maybe ten pupils or less. take into account the smaller magical population and the relative ease of travel and you could assume that several of these smaller buildings were located around the country. perhaps a larger one then being formed in the outback where there is plenty of unexplored land and secret, sacred places.

Indonesians probably go to the Japanese school. but there are probably a bunch of smaller Indonesian schools in Indonesia, just not well known like Hogwarts or Beauxbatons.

why are there so few schools in North and South America? Although it makes sense that there are only 2 because they were discovered so recently(in comparison to Europe) you’d think that there would be at least 5 because of the population(my guess is that 1 out of 100 people there are magic, whereas Europe would be only 1 out of 200).

I want to believe there is a school for German speaking people. I have German heritage but am American and live in California but the only school in North America is half way across the country!!!
I am a huge fan of the Harry Potter series of books I never want to watch the movie because they are misleading.
I have no lie where the other schools are but I think maybe Switzerland or the Himalayas. If you agree write a comment thingy bellow here. 😉
