The maps above show how Europeans feel about their children being in relationships with people from different racial/religious minorities. (Black, Asian, Muslim and Jewish).
The data comes from the 2015 Eurobarometer report on Discrimination in the EU.
You can see each map in more detail below:
Would You Feel Comfortable If Your Child Was In A Relationship With a Black Person?
On average only 64% of EU citizens would be comfortable with their sons or daughters being in a relationship with a Black person. However, the results vary widely by country.
Sweden is the most accepting at 89%, followed by Luxembourg 85%, Netherlands 83%, Denmark 82%, and the UK at 81%.
The least accepting country is Bulgaria at 21%, followed by the Czech Republic and Slovakia at 23% each.
Would You Feel Comfortable If Your Child Was In A Relationship With an Asian Person?
On average EU citizens are slightly more accepting of relationships with Asians over Blacks, with 69% having no issue with their sons or daughters being in a relationship with an Asian person.
Sweden is once again the most accepting at 92%, followed by Luxembourg 87%, France 85%, Denmark 85%, Netherlands 84% and the UK at 80%.
The least accenting country was the Czech Republic at 25%, followed by Slovakia 26%, Bulgaria 32%, Cyprus 35%, and Lithuania at 36%.
Would You Feel Comfortable If Your Child Was In A Relationship With a Muslim Person?
Unfortunately, although not surprising, many Europeans would not support their sons or daughters being in a relationship with a Muslim person. Overall, only 50% of EU citizens would have no issue.
Sweden and the UK are the most accepting at 69% each, followed by France 65%, Luxembourg 63% and Ireland 61%.
The least accepting are Czech Republic at 12%, followed by Slovakia at 16%, Cyprus 23%, Lithuania 25% and Bulgaria 27%.
Would You Feel Comfortable If Your Child Was In A Relationship With a Jewish Person?
Finally, for a continent with such a troubled past with Antisemitism, it’s somewhat concerning that only 69% of EU citizens would support their sons or daughters being in a relationship with a Jewish person.
The most accepting countries were Sweden 87%, followed by France 81%, Netherlands 81%, the UK 81% and Luxembourg 80%.
The least accepting were Cyprus and Slovakia at 36% each, followed by Malta 45%, Romania 45%, Greece 46%, Lithuania 48%, and the Czech Republic 49%.
Germans at 68% acceptance, while from the least accepting, were still below the EU average.

Brit here, I’d be Ok with all listed bar an orthodox Jewish person, and some sects of Islam. In my view these ideologies tend to hold views on relationships and gender roles which are restrictive and unacceptable in modern society.
Korakys says
Czechia is a bit surprising for me given that it is the most atheist country in Europe. I guess atheism and liberalism don’t go hand in hand, however I wonder what the results would be if the question was asked about marrying a Christian. It would be good to know to get a “control” for the data.
Antonov says
The Czechs are not believers but they say they are Christian. Czech President Milos Zeman calls himself a Christian culture just like the Czechs, but they are not believers like the Poles. The Czechs will prefer to be with a European Christian than with a Christian from Asia or Africa.
Czech guy says
I would like to see, how many people were part of this project because I absolutely disagree with that.. most people in Czech rep have absolutely no problem with jews or asian people.. Muslim and africans may be true because of the nowadays situation. But most of the people are very liberal and we do not care about these things too much. For example Polish people are much more religious and culturally and historicly they dont like jews (which is not included in the map above..) Just saying, nice day to everyone.. 馃槈
Wim Night says
Sweden in even more people are atheists. But religion and racism is not the same thing, it’s a social thing. Even though some religions are racist.
Jaroslav Losos says
This is how the question was translated into Czech (and Slovak):
“Would it feel good if your child had an affair with…?”
Even if the question ended with “…a white person of the opposite sex”, it would still get a lot of negative answers.
That’s all you need to know to understand that the survey is completely worthless.
Vasil Hristov says
Very troubling data if true, the numbers are waaay high.
Bart Devries says
Interestingly no one asked “does muslim parents accept if their kids would marry a non muslim”?
Alvaro Carbonell Delgado says
Maybe in other map would be nice to see that, but here is pointless mark that in that way, you’re just trying to avoid the point of Europe being xenophobe.
Bart Devries says
nice catch 22. Using “Europe = xenophobe” to counter “people from the middle east are xyz”.

A shocking data. Sweden seems almost BRAIN-DEAD. Nothing surprising that it is world rape capital.

Based on an average of 1,000 persons asked per country. Even elections tend to have larger sample sizes.

Without those, this is just Europe-bashing.
ZK says
Very late comment, but “Asian” is very unspecific. I believe there is going to be a huge difference between Russia, China, India, and Japan.
Dan says
It is clear that ‘Asian’ is used in the racial sense. Most people will probably think of either the Indian subcontinent or East Asia.
Dan says
It is important to take into account how open people are in general when discussing these topics. In other words, the sincerity of replies varies from country to country. I expect people in Eastern Europe express their opinions on interracial issues more openly, because the pressure to be politically correct is not so strong in Eastern Europe. At the same time people in Eastern Europe are less exposed to mass immigration which makes interracial relationships look more exotic.
Alena says
I didn’t see it myself but from reliable source I have that the problem was in the poor translation of the questions, they weren’t neutral.
Gappka says
I agree. Personally, I am not against any religion (btw I am an open-minded Christian). But how can for example a Czech person feel “comfortable” with a Muslim/Black/Jewish partner of his child, if he has never met such people?
We shouldn’t ask WHICH people are racist. We should rather ask WHY and HOW to solve this problem.
Tyler says
First of all this isn’t a problem, people can like whoever they want, is it a problem for me not to want to marry a Muslim because of her beliefs? Is it wrong of me to not want to marry a black person because I’m simply not attracted to them?
Truth Teller says
It’s always not being attracted to a black person. What if the black person is not attracted to you? Most people want to stay in their race, so it’s a non-factor.
Shogo says
As a Bulgarian person, i’d call this map false.

i have met few bulgarians and i had always lots of trouble with them. in general i had always troubles with slavic people which is funny because i couldn’t care less about slavic people (also german people, african people, muslim people, asian people) and we have the same ancestors (indo-aryan, slavic). i’m a muslim looking aryan (iranian). i hate to be in conflict in uncivilized cultures.

Doopie says
Spain and France said no more to black than asian but black female/white male couples are more statistically common in FR/SP than asian female/white male couples are.. wtf?
rachel says
Wouldn鈥檛 that be because there鈥檚 percentage wise there鈥檚 a larger black population than asian in those countries? Correct me if i鈥檓 wrong!
charles says
I wish this map was more specific, in some countries “Asian” means Indians and even white/Caucasoid groups like Iranians and Arabs, while other “Asian” means East Asian/Mongoloid.
Anyway this is another proof that the nonsense invention of “Europe” and “Asia” (instead of Eurasia) serves no other purpose than to distort the understanding of geography, anthropology and history.
anonmyous says
i have aryan and semitic ancestors and look like a mix of arab and iranian. i can be nearly everything but gay or religious. i eat pork. as an “muslim-looking” guy i feel offended. i think i should go back to where my parents where born or maybe north america.
